Chapter Six

Blue moonlight fell over Lissy’s hair, turning it to silver. After a sweaty game and a sweatier hour in the bungalow, she’d showered and secured it in a long tail. Several times Jack had wrapped his hand around the length, tugging gently and remembering that moment he’d kissed her while she came apart around him.

Sweet Jesus, he was really losing it. He wasn’t the type of guy to reminisce about past sex. He was always looking forward to the next tryst.

She tilted her head back to stare at the stars. They blazed across Texas, lighting up the whole universe, but all Jack really saw was Lissy.

Yep, losing it.

He wrapped his arms around her and nuzzled her throat. She smelled like berries and woman. She softened in his embrace, curling against his chest. For a long minute they stood holding each other.

“I’ve been thinking about what we talked about at dinner, Jack.”

Oh no.

“Mm. What’s that?” Strands of her hair caught on his unshaven jaw.

“I’ve grown very comfortable with you in a short time, and I think you have too.”

He nodded, rubbing his cheek on her temple. So comfortable that she was shoving him off-balance.

“But when you answered me about that cowboy you said you liked, I don’t think you were telling me the whole story.”

He drew away enough to look at her eyes. In the moonlight, they glittered black. His chest worked around a sigh that he finally released. “What do you want to know?”

“You said you like him.”

“I do like Paul.” Man, why did he sound as though he’d just swallowed a bit and a spur and chased it with whiskey?

“He’s your friend?”

“Yeah.”

“But you’ve never…had relations with him?”

He tightened his hold on her upper arms. “What are you getting at, baby? What’s going on in that pretty little head of yours?” He didn’t want to know, yet he craved a certain answer.

She pulled away and stepped back. Two steps, three. She wrapped her arms around her middle, suddenly appearing shy when she never had before. Not even while streaking in her skivvies across a football field with more than a dozen mostly naked cowboys and a few of their women.

He held out his hands, palms up. “Just say it. There’s no barrier between us.”

She bobbed her head. “You’re right. I can tell you anything because I won’t be here forever.”

Hell, that was right. She was leaving in a few days.

Chest tight, he said, “Just speak your mind. Whatever it is I’ll—”

“I wondered if he—Paul—might come to my bungalow.”

He stared at her for three long heartbeats. Was she putting him out to pasture? Replacing him with six feet of hunky man with the body of a god?

“I-I mean… Damn, Jack, the way you’re looking at me is making me more nervous.”

He stepped close to her. “What exactly are you asking?”

“I want Paul to come to our bed.” Her voice dropped with every syllable uttered, so the final word was a scant breath.

He let his head fall back and he stared unseeingly at the Big Dipper.
